Types Of Health Insurance Plans
When choosing health insurance that fits your needs, it is important to thoroughly understand the options that you have. There are 4 main types of coverage on the market today.
Fee-For-Service - the traditional health insurance that reimburses you for a portion of your medical expenses.
HMO / Health Maintenance Organizations - this type gives you coverage if you use their doctors and hospitals. If not, you pay out-of-pocket.
PPO / Preferred Provider Organization - this is a more comprehensive plan that allows you to use in-network or out-of-network health care providers. Your coverage is much better if you use the PPO's caregivers than if you choose your own.
POS / Point of Service - requires you to have a primary care doctor and do referrals through him or her like the HMO, but it will pay a portion of out-of-network provider costs like a PPO does, should you choose to go that route.
How To Choose The Best Health Insurance Company
Before choosing a health insurance policy, it is important to research the company offering the coverage. Many states offer report cards on HMOs and PPOs. This will give you a good overview of the company's performance. You can also check on their ratings for stability with one of the insurance ratings companies, like A.M. Best, Standard and Poor's, or Moody's. This rating will give you a good idea of their financial stability and whether they should be able to meet future obligations.
When making your final decision and if you are comfortable with the companies you are considering and the type of policy you want to take out, make sure to still compare the coverage being offered by each. Even if you are comparing two PPOs or two POS policies, check not just the premium being charged for each, but the deductibles, co-pays, out-of-pocket maximums, exclusions and other conditions. How To Find Cheap Health Insurance
There are a number of ways to save money on your health benefits and find a low cost health insurance plan. One of the single biggest things that you can do is to join your employers group health plan ONLY if your employer will pay all or most of your premiums for you. If your employer does not offer a group health plan, will not pay for benefits for you, or will only pay for benefits for you but will not pay for benefits for your spouse or children then you need to investigate into individual health insurance.
Insurance is regulated at the State and not Federal level and so some things differ from State to State but in the great majority of States individual health insurance will be much cheaper than group health insurance. For a similar plan from even the same company an individual plan will be about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of a group plan. Choose an individual health plan to find the cheapest health insurance coverage for the best value.
Another way to find cheap health benefits is to purchase a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) coupled with a Health Savings Account (HSA). HSA's have much lower premiums than traditional copay health insurance plans and they allow for some very nice tax benefits. All of the money that you contribute into an HSA you will be able to take as an above the line tax deduction (up to annual IRS limits), the money in the account grows tax free and rolls over from year to year, and the money comes out tax free as long as you use the money to pay for qualified medical expenses (and you can even use the money for anything you like without penalty once you reach the age of 65).
