AARP Health Insurance For People Aged 50-64

AARP Essential Premier Health Insurance

This form of AARP health insurance is offered by Aetna Life & Health Insurance Company. The plan may be written as if the insured individual is a group with one member in it; therefore you would qualify for some options that you may not have available with an individual health insurance plan. The Premier health insurance plan offers:

  1. The option of seeing the doctor of your choice, whether they are members of the network or not.

  2. Specialist care with no referral required.

  3. The convenience of not having to fill out claim forms when you consult with a doctor who is part of the provider network.

  4. A choice of deductibles to fit your budget, ranging from $1,500, $2,500, or $5,000 per year).

Essential Plus Health Insurance

The Essential Plus Health Insurance plan provides coverage for you (the insured), your spouse (if he or she is under the age of 65), and your dependent children. Features and benefits of this plan include:

  1. Cash benefits paid (at a fixed rate) for covered doctor visits, hospital stays, lab tests, and visits to the Emergency Room
  2. Consult with the doctor and go to the hospital of your choice (whether they are part of your network or not)
  3. Benefits paid to you or to the provider (your choice)
  4. Insurance cannot be cancelled if your health changes
  5. Any rate increases will apply to all plan members living in a certain state and must be approved by AARP

Essential Health Insurance

When you enroll in the Essential Health Insurance plan from AARP, you get the following benefits:

  1. A fixed cash benefit for doctor visits, surgery, laboratory tests (outpatient), and X-rays

  2. A payment of up to $700.00 daily for approved hospital stays

  3. Cash benefits for home care provided after surgery, including physiotherapy

AARP Health Insurance For People Aged 65 And Up

Once you have reached the age of 65, a number of Medicare health insurance are offered by AARP. Along with basic Medicare, you can choose a plan designed to offer you an increased level of coverage.

Basic Medicare offers coverage for hospital care for seniors. For those who qualify, hospice care is also covered under the Basic plan. Long term care is not covered. Medical coverage under Basic Medicare helps to defray the cost of doctor visits, home care, outpatient medical services, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy.

Medicare Advantage plans provide the same level of coverage as Basic Medicare, along with some services the Basic plan doesn't cover. It is possible to get lower copayment rates with Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage plans can be structured in the following ways:

    1. Medicare Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plan
    2. Medicare Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plan

Medicare Supplemental Insurance is also known as Medigap. It is designed to cover deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Since you need to pay for these things yourself, they are considered gaps in your coverage. Benefits payable under Medigap are the same in each state, but underwriting costs and ratings can vary between insurers.

Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans cover the cost of generic and brand name medications. You would be responsible for paying a monthly premium for your coverage, and there is an annual deductible. When you need a prescription filled, you will pay for part of the cost yourself, while the balance is covered through your drug plan.

AARP Health Insurance: Universal Insurance Products

In addition to the insurance options listed above, health insurance offered through AARP also includes:

AARP Dental Insurance Plan

AARP members can also purchase dental insurance with the following features:

  1. No need to change dentists
  2. Guaranteed premium rates for 24 months
  3. Coverage for preventive dental care, emergency dental services, crowns, fillings, etc.
  4. Low out of pocket expenses

AARP Long Term Care Insurance

Choosing the right long term care insurance coverage can be complicated. This form of AARP health insurance allows members to customize their plan in a way that makes sense to them. Depending on family history, you may want to opt for a plan that covers you for a longer stay in a nursing home or for home care. These types of plans provide benefits up to a lifetime maximum; as fees are charged against the policy, the amount of coverage available decreases.

AARP long term care insurance offers you the following features:

  1. Care while in a nursing home
  2. Care while in an assisted living facility
  3. Home care
  4. Hospice care
  5. Respite care
  6. International coverage

AARP long term care insurance gives you the option of choosing the level of coverage you want for a stay in a nursing home. These benefits range from $3,000.00 per month to $12,000.00 per month. Choosing a lower amount of coverage keeps your monthly premiums low, but may not provide you with enough insurance coverage.

If you need to stay in a nursing home, your insurance will pay up to the monthly maximum; you will be responsible for paying any additional expenses. In a situation where your monthly expenses are less than your monthly benefit amount, any unused funds are carried forward. You will have the flexibility to extend your stay in the nursing home, if necessary.

Optional coverage is available to increase the amount of your coverage over time without any additional underwriting required. This is a good move, since it takes inflation into account. The type of benefit increase coverage that is right for you will depend upon your current age, your financial situation (both current and projected), and the monthly maximum level of coverage you have selected.
