WellPoint Health Insurance Company

WellPoint Health Insurance Company was formed when WellPoint Health Networks, Inc. merged with Anthem Inc. in November of 2004. Previous to this event, both WellPoint and Anthem had acquired control of several other insurance providers. After the merge with Anthem, WellPoint became the largest health benefits company in the United States. The merger put WellPoint Health Insurance in control of a total of twenty-two smaller companies across fourteen states.

WellPoint is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. However, it is a Blue Cross Blue Shield licensed insurance provider in the following states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin. In many of these states, the insurance company is still known either as Anthem or as Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Essentially, WellPoint is a large company that has acquired and now owns several other companies. They own Anthem Inc. which provides health insurance, dental and vision coverage, and life insurance. Lumenos is also owned by WellPoint. This company offers Health Savings Account plans (HSA) and Health Reimbursement Account plans (HRA). WellPoint owns an online mail-order pharmacy called PrecisionRX which uses automated ordering systems that ensure more accurate prescription-filling. This is just a sample of the variety of insurance related companies that WellPoint has acquired.

Understanding that one health insurance plan may not fit every individual or business, WellPoint has plans that differ depending on the size of a business or various factors for individuals such as age and income. National Accounts plans cover businesses with 5000 or more employees. Companies with 51-4999 employees qualify for a Large Group Customer plan. Small Group Customer plans cover businesses with 50 or fewer employees. Each one of these plans is specially designed to meet the needs of that particular size of business. Seniors have access to quality Medicare supplemental insurance, and families that qualify for Medicaid can receive that insurance through WellPoint. The cost of each plan varies depending on the state the individual or business is located in.

In addition to their insurance plans, WellPoint also offers a variety of specialized programs. Individuals can also receive personalized health plans designed to promoted positive health and lifestyle changes. These plans utilize many professionals like registered nurses, dieticians, and therapists. The company also offers programs to help patients manage continuing conditions like asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Another useful tool offered by WellPoint is the Healthy Parenting initiative. “Healthy Parenting” is a series of programs that encourage parents to promote healthy behavior both in themselves and their children.

WellPoint also has plans to accommodate large and small businesses. They provide quality health insurance, but they also have many other options for companies. Companies can purchase group life and disability insurance, dental and vision coverage, workers compensation plans, and long-term care insurance. The variety of options offered makes them a good choice for many businesses. It is especially helpful for small companies to be able to get different types of insurance from the same company. Sometimes large corporations can lose sight of the individuals they are serving. This does not seem to be the case with WellPoint as WellPoint appears to be very aware of the different needs of individuals and businesses and is working to meet those needs sufficiently.
