Best Health Insurance

The best health insurance isn’t necessarily the cheapest plan or the plan with the most benefits.  The best health insurance policy is the one that is going to give you the personalized coverage for a price that you can afford.  That takes time, research and planning.  The ideal place to start finding the best on for you is by asking your family and friends who their health insurance company is, what their insurance covers, their premium costs, and if they are happy with it. Then do your research to compare quotes from some of the best health insurance companies that offer coverage in your area.

After that, make a list of benefits you want and need.  Put them in two columns and focus on your needs first because some of these items will be standard in all plans, others will be riders.  When it comes to wants in health insurance these are usually things that are nice to have just in case and can usually be added later. Using this technique you will begin to lay the framework for what is truly the best health insurance plan for you.

Once you have decided what is and is not important to you to have in your health insurance plan then let us help you with necessary research. The Best Health Insurance Plan Is Not One Size Fits All

To understand how the best health insurance differs between individuals, take an example of someone with asthma who will have medications (some of them are rather expensive) that need to be filled every month.  That person will probably want a policy that has good prescription coverage and will cover seeing a specialist.

Someone with very few health problems will more than likely want to make sure he has basic coverage, just in case.  A married person with several children will need different coverage than a single person.

So how do you pick the best health insurance plan for your needs?

Things To Consider When Looking For The Best Health Insurance Coverage

  1. Don’t think that you can save money if you are healthy by not purchasing health insurance.  The hospital bills from a car accident alone can wipe out a savings account and put you into bankruptcy.  In fact, excessive medical bills are one of the top five reasons people end up filing bankruptcy.

  1. Group insurance offered by your employer is better than any plan you are going to find on your own, if you have a pre-existing condition (unless your pre-existing conditions are minor in nature or you are eligible for a HIPAA health insurance plan).  Your employer is going to cover the bulk of the policy and you don’t have to worry about being denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions.  If you are married and your spouse also has employer-sponsored health insurance and you are looking to save a few dollars, take a look at both policies, one may be better than the other or have better rates.  You may be able to eliminate one of them. Though one of the nice things about having double coverage is a lot of times one company will cover everything the other won’t, including co-pays.

  1. There are several ways that a person can get a tax break on their insurance.  Once your medical expenses reach 7.5% of your income, you can deduct them, including premiums, on your income tax return.  If you are self-employed there is the possibility you can deduct the full amount of your insurance premium from your taxes as an above the line deduction (a deduction on the front of your 1040 before arriving at your Adjusted Gross Income [AGI] calculation).  Additionally, Health Savings Accounts will allow you to store away pre-tax dollars for medical expenses lowering the amount of taxes deducted from your pay each week.

  1. If you loose your job, you don’t have to loose your health insurance.  Companies with 20 or more employees are required by law to offer you up to 18 months of COBRA coverage under the policy you have, with you covering both the employee costs and those of the employer.  New HIPPA laws prevent you from being turned down for health insurance if you have been covered under a policy in the last 63 days even if you have a pre-existing condition.

  1. Dental, vision and mental health care are usually not covered in standard policies.  If you are in need of any of these you will have to purchase them separately or as additional riders on your policy.
