Protecting Yourself Against Phony Arizona Health Insurance

Arizona has an ongoing problem with bogus health insurance companies that are preying on people in need of affordable health insurance and the elderly.  Always verify through the Arizona Department of Insurance any insurance company that you are unfamiliar with.

  • Just because something looks legit doesn’t mean it is.  Fancy websites, marketing materials and official looking documents don’t make a company legitimate.

  • Look for original signatures and seals.  If the paperwork looks photocopied and not original it probably is.  Contact the Arizona Department of Insurance.

  • Check out their website.  Be leery of any company that does not list a physical address, other than a post office box, or phone number.  You need more than an email address or voice mail box.  Legitimate companies do not use email as the only way to contact them or use voice mail boxes.

  • Research any company you are going to do business with.  Places that can assist you are the Better Business Bureau, the Arizona chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, and Arizona Department of Insurance.  Check the company’s rating with A.M. Best.

  • Be on the look out for discount medical plans.  These are not insurance policies but are marketed as if they are.

  • Ask a lot of questions, keep track of who you spoke to and when.

  • When in doubt then choose a large and well known Arizona health insurance company like a United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Humana, Aetna, etc.

How To Identify A Phony Arizona Health Insurance Company

  • If you are given a quote that is much lower than ones you have received previously.  Health insurance companies keep their rates competitive so there should not be a huge discrepancy between quotes.

  • Unsolicited offers

  • If you are told that they will cover anyone and there is no underwriting or they do not ask any questions about your health status.

  • If they are promoting a limited time price.

  • If they are promising a “special discount” or “special price” just for you (Arizona health insurance rates are set by the insurance company and regulated by the Arizona Department of Insurance. Shopping for AZ health insurance is not like buying a used car – one cannot haggle and get a better deal from one agent versus another or even by buying direct from the insurance company.

Arizona Health Insurance: Mandated Insurance Coverage By State Law

Arizona health insurance companies are required by law to include the following in standard Arizona health care policies.

  1. Mammograms.

  2. Prescription plans must cover off label use of drugs for cancer treatment.

  3. Insurance plans must cover any covered patient costs involved in clinical cancer trials.

  4. Newborns and adopted children must be automatically covered for the first 31 days of joining a family.

  5. When a baby is being adopted after birth, maternity benefits of the adopting family must cover the maternity care of the biological mother.

  6. The insurance company must provide coverage after birth for 48 hours hospital stay in the event of a normal delivery and 96 hours after a c-section.

  7. Handicapped children must receive continuous coverage on their parents policy after they reach normal age that would end their coverage.

  8. Insurance companies in the state of Arizona can not deny claims for physical therapy or occupational therapy out of network because of lack of referral.

  9. Ambulance service.

  10. In the event that someone has a disabling, chronic, degenerative, or life threatening disease then arrangements must be made that they have a standing referral at all times.

  11. Breast reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy.

  12. Group insurance for a company with more than 50 employees can not place a lifetime limit on mental health care.

  13. Covered surgical procedures must be covered regardless if the medical treatment facility is in or out of network.

Arizona Individual Health Insurance Plans

One thing to keep in mind when shopping for insurance is that an Arizona individual health insurance plan is much cheaper than an Arizona group health insurance plan. Often once can purchase an individual health plan for about half the cost of a group health plan with similar benefits. The thing to keep in mind when searching for a cheap AZ individual health plan is that one is not automatically accepted onto an individual health plan (this is why individual health plans in Arizona are so much cheaper – because the insurance company gets to pick and choose who they will approve onto the plan).

Arizona Group Health Insurance Plans

While an group health insurance in Arizona is typically much more expensive than an individual plan (although most AZ residents would not even know it because their employers pay most if not all of their premium costs) group health insurance does have its advantages. The first major advantage to purchasing a group or small business health insurance policy in AZ is that the insurance company cannot deny you coverage for any pre-existing health conditions that you may have. This is why if you are self employed, unhealthy, and looking for health insurance in Arizona then your best bet is usually to purchase a group plan.

Arizona COBRA Health Insurance Plans

An Arizona COBRA health insurance plan is a temporary continuation plan that extends group coverage beyond the date that an employee or dependent is eligible for the group plan. The COBRA laws only apply to businesses in Arizona that have 20 or more employees.

Arizona HIPAA Health Insurance Plans

If you work for a company with less than 20 employees (and are ineligible for COBRA) or you accept a COBRA plan but the coverage is about to run out and you are unable to be approved for a regular Arizona individual health insurance plan due to health issues then you may be eligible for a guaranteed issue Arizona HIPAA individual health insurance plan that is required to cover all pre-existing conditions.
