Colorado Health Insurance

Colorado is ranked as the 16th healthiest state to live in; yet 17.2% of its citizens lack Colorado health insurance.  Colorado has one of the highest rates of uninsured people per capita.  The major health concern in the state isn’t obesity or cancer, its pregnancy. If you are seeking health insurance in CO, make sure you understand your needs, your choices, and your available options.

Colorado Health Insurance And Pregnancy

One of the biggest health care issues in the state of Colorado is the limited access to prenatal care.  To complicate things even more Colorado is one of the top ten states in terms of multiple (twin and triplet) births and low birth weight babies.  Both have been attributed to the high altitude of Colorado.  The high altitude also increases the chances of hypertension in pregnancy leading to complications. So what are your choices during pregnancy?

Colorado Individual Health Care Plans –  These do not routinely cover maternity care.  A maternity rider has to be purchased and it can raise your insurance premium as much as $200 a month and there is a 12 month waiting period.  Meaning you have to have the policy 12 months before becoming pregnant.  Even then the policies only cover 50% to 60% of costs and will not cover delivery if it is premature.

Colorado Child Health Plan Plus – Child Health Plan Plus is low cost health insurance provided to children 18 and under and pregnant women aged 19 and older who have no other medical insurance and are not eligible for Medicaid.

Colorado Health Insurance And Mental Illness

Senate Bill 07-36 went into effect on January 1, 2008 calling for six mental illnesses, believed to be biologically based, to be covered under health benefits and not mental health.  These illnesses are schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder.

CoverColorado – Colorado Health Insurance For High Risk

CoverColorado is Colorado’s risk non-profit high risk health insurance pool for Colorado residents who can not get insurance because of pre-existing conditions, are not eligible for any other insurance coverage as well as those eligible for health insurance coverage under HIPPA.   CoverColorado uses the PacifiCare PPO network and offers eight different deductible plans.

Colorado Indignant Care Program (CICP)

The Colorado Indignant Care Program provides discounted health coverage to low income individuals through participating health care providers and as a way to prevent individuals from spending more than 10% of their income on health care and co-pays.

The Colorado Indignant Care Program is NOT health insurance.  It is funded through state and federal monies to help those low income citizens that can not afford health care.  It is also not dependant on if you have health insurance coverage, however, those eligible for Medicaid or the Child Health Plan Plus are not eligible to use the Colorado Indignant Care Program.

Other Colorado Health Insurance Options And State Supplements

Breast and Cervical Cancer Program – The Breast and Cervical Cancer Program is a specific Medicaid program for women between the ages of 40 and 64 who have been diagnosed with either breast or cervical cancer or conditions that could lead to breast or cervical cancer and have income that is less than 250% of the federal poverty level.

Colorado Cares Rx – This program is to help people cover the costs of prescription drugs by providing a program where generic drugs can be obtained between $20 and $40 for a 90 days supply.

Colorado Medicaid Disease Management Programs – Disease management is to not only improve the quality of care that one gets for specific diseases, but to help cut medical costs by teaching patients how to better manage their conditions.  The CMDMP is available to those with asthma, high risk pregnancies, those with weight issues, heart disease and diabetes.

Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) – This program is for those aged 55 or older who need nursing facility level care and is managed by Medicare/Medicaid.  Those who qualify for either Medicare or Medicaid will not have any out of pocket costs, those with other insurance will have limited costs based on their insurance plan.

Colorado HIPAA Health Insurance

The Colorado HIPAA laws are designed to protect individuals that for reasons beyond their control are unable to be approved for an individual health insurance plan (usually because of pre-existing conditions) and are ineligible for a CO group health plan. There are 6 requirements that one must meet before they can be approved for coverage on a Colorado HIPAA health insurance plan. Ask a qualified CO health insurance agent or speak with the Colorado Department of Insurance for more details about the HIPAA requirements in CO.
