Louisiana Health Insurance

For residents of Louisiana, health insurance is an important part of an overall plan to protect their assets. Whether you are married or single, everyone in LA should have adequate health insurance. If you have children, it's even more important to have insurance to help pay for their health care needs. Here are some facts to guide you on your quest for the best Louisiana health insurance coverage.

Louisiana Health Insurance: Why You Need Coverage

Having LA health insurance in place is a way to protect the assets you have worked hard to accumulate. If you are injured in an accident or become seriously ill, you need to have a way to pay for the cost of your care. In addition, you need to be able to meet your financial obligations until you are able to return to work.

If you don’t have this important coverage in place, then you will be responsible for paying for these costs out of your own pocket. If you have adequate health insurance, the insurance company will cover these costs, up to your policy limits.

Louisiana Health Insurance: Where To Get Coverage

If your employer doesn't have group health insurance coverage, then you will need to consider buying an individual policy. Both HMO (Health Management Organization) and pay-for-service policies are available.

If you are a Louisiana resident and are unable to get health insurance due to a pre-existing condition, there are two plans available to assist you:

Louisiana High Risk Pool

The Louisiana high risk pool provides insurance coverage to individuals who have been denied health insurance by at least two insurance companies. Since the plan is funded by the state, the number of people who can participate in the plan may be limited depending on the amount of money available. If you apply for coverage under this plan, you may be put on a waiting list until additional funds are received from the state.

If you are accepted into the Louisiana High Risk Pool, you will be covered for the following:

  1. Doctor's Services

  2. Laboratory Tests

  3. X-rays

  4. Hospital Stays

  5. Therapies and Treatments

Deductibles for this Plan range from $1,000-$5,000. There is a lifetime limit of $500,000 for individual benefits paid.

Louisiana HIPAA Health Insurance

If you were previously covered under a group medical policy and have lost your coverage, you may be able to get coverage under the provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Under Louisiana state law you may be eligible for coverage under HIPAA if the insurance company that had insured you has decided to stop providing insurance to individuals in the state.

Deductibles under HIPAA range from $1,000-$5,000 per year, and the lifetime limits for benefits payable is $500,000. There is a maximum benefits payable for each calendar year (January 1-December 31) of $100,000.

Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP)

The Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP) is designed to provide health insurance benefits for children under the age of 19. LaCHIP will pay for children to see a doctor, get care at a hospital, buy prescriptions, and pay for shots. Depending upon the income level of the parents the LaCHIP program is typically no cost or low cost. Talk to an experienced Louisiana health insurance agent about eligibility requirements for LaCHIP or call the LaCHIP directly at 1-877-252-2447.

Group Health Insurance In Louisiana

Many medical insurance companies in Louisiana are beginning to offer lower cost group health insurance options in Louisiana. Some of these new low cost initiatives include Health Savings Accounts (HSA’s), Medical Reimbursement Plans, and Cafeteria Plans.

Individual Health Insurance In Louisiana

The key advantage to choosing an individual health insurance plan in LA is the price. Individual plans are much cheaper than group plans. The catch is that one is not automatically accepted onto an individual plan in LA as they would be with a group plan. Some residents of Louisiana who have pre-existing health conditions are forced to choose a more expensive group plan or a Louisiana HIPAA health insurance plan because of the differences in the medical underwriting process.

Louisiana Health Insurance: How To Choose An Insurance Company

When you are looking for health insurance in Louisiana, you will need to consider the following factors before deciding to buy a policy:

  1. Is the policy non-cancelable? - This means that your insurance company cannot deny you coverage under the insurance policy as long as you continue to pay your premiums. The company can choose to increase your premium rates, though. Many insurance companies offer consumers a conditionally renewable policy. This gives the insurance company the option of canceling all policies of a certain type, but not a specific person's policy.

  2. What does the policy cover? - Before you apply for coverage from an insurer, you need to understand exactly what the policy you are considering will cover. You also need to understand what medical conditions are excluded from coverage, since no single health insurance policy will cover you in every situation.

  3. Does the insurance company have a good financial rating? - It's important to choose an insurance company that has the resources to pay out if you need to make a large claim against your policy. You can find out this valuable information by checking out the company with A.M. Best or Moody's Investors Services. Both of these ratings companies will be able to provide you with this important information.
