Maryland Health Insurance

774,970 residents are without Maryland health insurance.  For the 5 million plus people in a state where one fourth of the population is considered obese, there are approximately 10,000 primary care physicians. However, getting to these physicians generally requires that you have appropriate Maryland health insurance in place. If you’re a resident of Maryland, health insurance options are available. Keep reading to find out the facts.

80% of children have full immunization coverage and the state of Maryland is the only state that has resorted to taking drastic measures in some areas to insure that all children are vaccinated.  In 2007, some 2,000 families were court ordered to give their children vaccinations.  Failure to comply resulted in jail time and fines.

Although this controversial action may have raised vaccination rates, not much is being done to actively cut down on the high incidence of infectious disease or the high violent crime rate. These figures have helped the state of Maryland rank number only 28th on a list of the healthiest states in the nation.

Maryland Health Insurance Plans

64% of employers providing insurance in the state of Maryland and almost 87% of the residents have insurance.  Around 700,000 people in the state do not have health insurance, and about 25,000 of those people are not eligible for any kind of insurance because they are undocumented illegal aliens.  For those legal residents that don’t have insurance there are a number of options if you are not offered group coverage through your employer.

  • Comprehensive Standard Health Benefit Plan – This is offered through small employers that have between 2 and 50 workers.  It is a standardized health benefit plan sanctioned by the Maryland Health Care Commission.

  • Individual plans – These are purchased on your own through independent insurance companies.  The options available are HMO, PPO, POS and pay-for-service plans.

  • Maryland Heath Insurance Risk Pool – This is for those people who can not get insurance because of pre-existing conditions.  Several choices of policies are available including the HMO option, a choice between a $500 and $1,000 deductible plan through a PPO, or a high deductible plan with a combined medical and pharmacy deductible of $2,600.

  • Health Discount Plans – This is not medical insurance.  This is a discount program, much like a price club, that gets you discounts on medical care through participating providers.

  • Health Savings Accounts – A HSA allows you to take out pre-tax dollars for medical expenses such as doctor’s appointments, glasses, hearing aids, prescriptions and some over the counter medications and supplies.

  • Self-Funded/Self-Insured Plans - These are provided by single employer or unions and are provided under the US Department of Labor’s Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration Employee Retirement Income Security Act and are not subject to state insurance laws.

  • Government Assistance including Medicare, Medicaid and MCHIP (Maryland Children’s Health Insurance Plan).

  • Maryland COBRA Health Insurance Plans – these are group continuation plans that last for 18-36 months.

  • Maryland HIPAA Health Insurance Plans – these are guaranteed issue individual health insurance plans that cover all pre-existing conditions.

Maryland Health Insurance: Where To Get Help

If you are shopping for health insurance and have questions, or if you already have health insurance and find yourself at odds with your insurance company, the Maryland Insurance Administration may be able to help you.  They offer a number of services that include:

  • Providing a list of all companies that are licensed to sell medical insurance, as well as other forms of insurance, in the state of Maryland.

  • Provide educational materials that can help you choose your health insurance company.

  • Help resolve issues regarding claims with your health insurance company (and other insurance providers) including limited mediation.

  • Investigate health insurance (and other insurance) companies to determine their compliance with state insurance laws, regulations and policy contracts and institute corrective actions against them if they are in violation.

The one thing that the Maryland Insurance Administration will NOT do is recommend one insurance company over another or give advice on what insurance coverage an individual should have.
