Nebraska Health Insurance

Nebraskans have virtually the same options that states in the rest of the country have when it comes to Nebraska health insurance.  The insurance carriers that service the mid-west service Nebraska with either traditional plans or managed health insurance plans.  Depending on your needs and your affiliations, you are sure to find some type of Nebraska health insurance coverage among the thousands of insurance plans available.

Nebraska Health Insurance Plans

Regardless of where you shop for Nebraska health insurance plans and carriers, you will have the same basic options.  The combination of products and services will be different yet comparable.  Insurance carriers assign each combination of products with its own name.  Those basic options appear as HMO’s, PPO’s, POS’s, HSA’s, and traditional fee for service plans.

The bottom line on determining which of these options is best for you depends on your priorities. HMOs tend to be the most restrictive and cost saving options. PPOs offer a lot of choice in providers, however you pay for that right. A Point of Service (POS) option is the best of both worlds.

Now your choice will hinge on your desire to visit a certain doctor and your need to manage costs. Indemnity or traditional plans mean you must pay for services up front and usually take the chore of submitting paperwork for reimbursement your self.

A Health Saving Account (HSA) is a bit different as it’s more of a way to manage your funds than an actual type of plan. The benefit is that you’re able to set aside pretax funds for your medical costs and therefore see significant tax savings.

One of the quickest ways to obtain rates is with an online tool like the one above. However, there is still the option to pick up the phone and ask an agent question on anything you’re not clear about.

Although seniors have the benefit of Medicare, it’s sometimes hard to understand.  Today with the options associated with Medicare part D regarding prescription drugs, it’s even more confusing.  Some unscrupulous agents are taking advantage of seniors with this lack of understanding.

Nebraska has its way of helping seniors understand and maintain health insurance with the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP).  This federally funded Nebraska program gives seniors a better understanding of their Medicare options.  SHIIP is available in every state.

Nebraska Health Insurance For Individuals

If you’re self employed, one way to obtain Nebraska health insurance for individuals is to maybe affiliate yourself with your professional organization.  This would be especially good if you have a preexisting condition.  Other individual options would be:

  • Piece together your policy with discount plans and short term plans

  • Purchase a comprehensive individual plan and utilize your 100% tax credit

  • Obtain a high deductible plan with a health savings account

Whichever plan you choose, as an individual, you have the option of detailing your Nebraska health insurance plan to meet your needs.

One major advantage to purchasing a Nebraska individual health insurance plan instead of a group health plan in NE is the cost. Individual plans are roughly half the cost of a group plan with similar benefits. While not all individual plans are issued on a guaranteed issue basis; the Nebraska HIPAA health insurance plan may be an option to those having trouble finding coverage.

Nebraska Health Insurance CHIP Plan

Nebraska’s health insurance CHIP plan was established in 1985 for low income Nebraskans who can’t otherwise afford health insurance.  This is a comprehensive plan that even has the option of opening a Health Savings Account (HSA) for deductibles and/or major medical.  You also have the flexibility of using out-of-network providers by paying a co-insurance like a PPO.

To qualify for CHIP you must have had 18 months of coverage prior to application.  You also must have exhausted your COBRA options and yet be HIPAA eligible.

Nebraska Health Insurance Pool For Pre-existing Conditions

NECHIP or Nebraska Comprehensive Health Insurance Pool is a Nebraska health insurance pool for pre-existing conditions.  Nebraskans who have exhausted their resources for obtaining affordable individual health insurance or without limitations can apply for NECHIP.  You can not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid and qualify for NECHIP.  Some examples of preexisting conditions are:

  • Diabetes
