Texas Health Insurance

For people living in Texas, health insurance can be difficult to come by. Did you know that one in four people living in TX doesn’t have health insurance? Don’t assume that you can’t afford health insurance in Texas before you have taken the time to do some research into your coverage options.

Texas Health Insurance: Eligibility For Coverage

All TX medical insurance companies use different methods to determine eligibility for coverage. If you have been turned down for coverage with one carrier, it doesn’t necessarily mean that another company won’t agree to insure you.

If you have applied for family coverage and one family member has been denied coverage, many insurance companies will offer a split approval. This means the rest of the family can still be covered by the company while the family member who has been denied coverage will need to look elsewhere for insurance.

When insurance companies are considering an application for insurance, they are looking for health conditions that are ongoing or have developed recently. If your health condition is stable and has been for some time, you shouldn’t have trouble getting covered.

Texas Health Insurance: Reasons Why Your Application For Coverage May Be Denied

Insurance claims may be denied for a number of reasons. Here are some common reasons why your application may be turned down:

  1. You are pregnant when you apply for coverage.

  2. You have sustained an injury requiring medical attention within the last six months.

  3. Your weight (in proportion to your height) is outside of the insurance company’s guidelines.

  4. You have a complicated medical history with multiple illnesses, conditions, or injuries.

  5. You are taking multiple types of prescription medications, especially brand name (as opposed to generic) ones.

Texas Health Insurance: How To Get Coverage

Even if you don’t have a lot of money to spend on your health insurance in TX, you still have a number of options available to you:

  1. COBRA: One place to consider when you need insurance in TX is the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). If you were previously covered under a group insurance plan, you may be able to continue your coverage under the Texas COBRA health insurance plan for a time. This may not be the most cost-effective option for you, since premiums will be high.

  2. Workers’ Compensation: If you are injured on the job, you are entitled to insurance under your employer’s Workers’ Compensation plan.

  3. Medicaid: Low-income individuals and families may qualify for Medicaid. Guidelines are set by each state. There is no cost to apply for coverage for yourself and your children.

  4. Medicare: People over the age of 65 or those receiving Social Security disability benefits would qualify for benefits.

  5. High Risk Insurance Pool for Texas: Individuals who have been turned down for health insurance coverage due to pre-existing conditions can apply for coverage through the Texas high-risk insurance pool plan. This coverage may not be cheap, but it will provide protection for those people who can afford it.

  6. Private Insurance: You have the option of applying for health insurance coverage with the insurer of your choice. Most companies have a number of insurance products for consumers to choose from. Before you conclude that you can’t afford to buy health insurance, do consider going with a higher deductible to keep the cost of monthly premiums down. You may also want to buy a policy with a higher deductible that will provide coverage in the event of a serious illness or injury where you will need extensive treatment.

  7. Short Term Health Insurance: While you are looking for a long-term solution to the challenge of finding health insurance, you may want to buy a short-term policy. Premiums for this type of coverage are generally affordable and you may be able to get coverage for up to 12 months.

  8. HIPAA: A Texas HIPAA health insurance plan is designed to provide a guaranteed issue individual health insurance plan to TX residents that meet 6 criteria. The plan will cover all applicants that meet those 6 criteria and it will cover all of their pre-existing conditions immediately.

Texas Health Insurance: Plans For Small Businesses

A group health insurance plan can be put in place for as few as two people, or as many as 50 group members. Part-time workers may be included in the plan, if desired. The employer is responsible for paying at least one-half of the employees’ premiums.

Under the provisions of a TX group health insurance plan, an applicant cannot be denied coverage, no matter what his or her health status is. All premiums paid by the employer are fully tax-deductible.

Texas Self Employed Health Insurance Plans

Some of the best Texas self employed health insurance plans are individual health insurance plans. While group health insurance plans in Texas will accept everyone onto the plan regardless of pre-existing health conditions, an individual health plan in Texas is much cheaper than a group plan.

If you are self employed and in fairly good health then you may be able to save quite a bit of money by choosing a low cost Texas individual health insurance plan.

Remember, the self employed health insurance tax deduction can be taken regardless of whether you purchase a group plan or an individual plan so get started saving some money!
