College Student Health Insurance

In the often complicated world of health insurance coverage, college student health insurance adds a new dimension.  Anyone that has a student going away to college needs to make sure that their health insurance needs are covered, not only in case of illness or injury, but because most colleges require that all college students have college student health insurance prior to attending classes.

College Student Health Insurance Options

  1. Parent’s Plan – Most health insurance plans will continue to cover child dependants as long as they are enrolled full time in school up to the age of 25.  There are a few factors that have to be considered with this option.  If the student is going to college in another state, will the parent’s insurance policy cover him?  Will the student have access to a health care provider that takes the insurance (especially if the student is covered on a HMO policy)?  If the parent’s policy is going to be used, it is best to talk to an agent from the insurance company to double check on coverage, limits and any special rules that apply to college students.

  1. COBRA – Depending on the insurance company of the parents, college students may be able to temporarily continue the same coverage they had through their parents policy under COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act)

  1. Short Term Health Insurance – Short term health insurance is an option for those who are no longer covered on their parent’s policy until they can secure permanent health insurance coverage.

  1. Individual Health Insurance Plan – Purchasing an individual health insurance plan, that won’t need any major changes after college, is often an affordable option for those no longer covered on their parent’s health insurance policy. This is especially attractive when you consider the fact that even if the student develops major health problems down the road that they can continue on the individual health insurance plan. This is a decided advantage over a short term health insurance plan because once the term is up for the short term plan then the student is dropped from coverage and if the student has major health problems then they may find it difficult to obtain coverage somewhere else.

  1. Policies Offered by Colleges – College student health insurance plans offered by colleges and universities vary from college to college and university to university and are typically partially subsidized by student tuition.  These policies also usually require that a lot of medical services be obtained at the campus clinic.
