Full Time Student Health Insurance Options

  1. Stay On Parent’s Policy – Every insurance company has different rules about the cut-off age on this; usually you are eligible if you are under the age of 25 and a full time student.   Have your parents check to see what the stipulations are on this.  If you are attending school out of state you will also have to research if you will be able to find medical facilities and doctors that will take your insurance.  If not, you will want to get a supplemental policy.

  1. COBRA – If you are over the age of 25 and still a full time student, you may be able to continue the coverage that your parents had for you under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act.

  1. Student Select Health Insurance – This is a special health insurance plan underwritten by Time Insurance Company and is offered through many insurance companies at low cost to meet the needs of college students as well as satisfy the health insurance requirements of most colleges.

  1. College Health Plan – Many colleges and universities have health insurance plans for students that are subsidized by tuition costs.  These vary from college to college and they don’t usually cover routine and preventative care, maternity care for women or immunizations and may require that you use the college’s clinic for a variety of services.

  1. Temporary Or Permanent Private Health Insurance – if you are going to be working while attending college and are waiting for your employee benefits to take effect, you might want to consider a temporary health insurance policy. It will meet the requirements of the school you are attending until your company-provided health insurance takes effect. If you will not have a job with group health insurance coming in the near future then choose a permanent health insurance plan so that you will not find yourself of being in the unfortunate circumstance of being unable to obtain coverage due to a health problem after your short term health plan lapses.
