Part Time Student Health Insurance

If you are a part time student, health insurance is something you may be wondering about. Is health insurance available to a part time student like yourself? You bet! You can still get student health insurance even though you are attending classes part time.

Part Time Student Health Insurance: What To Consider Before Buying

Before you decide on a part time student health insurance policy, be sure that you understand the following:

  1. How much are the premiums?

  2. How often do you pay them?

  3. How soon does coverage start after you pay your premium?

  4. Do you need to answer any medical questions or have a medical exam to qualify for coverage?

  5. Does the policy provide coverage for doctor visits and hospitalization?

  6. What happens if you need surgery?

  7. Are prescriptions covered? Do I need to get approval before getting certain types of medications?

  8. How much is the deductible?

  9. Can you go to see the doctor of your choice, or do you need to get approval in advance?

  10. Do you need to get a referral before you can consult with a specialist?

  11. What types of illness or injuries (for example, injuries sustained while participating in varsity or intramural sports) are not covered under the policy?

  12. After you have reached your deductible, what percentage of your expenses will be reimbursed?

  13. How are claims made under the plan paid? Do you need to pay the expense first and then wait for reimbursement?

  14. What happens if you drop out of school, graduate, or decide to pursue your studies full time?

  15. Do you have health insurance if you are traveling?

Factors That Impact Part Time Student Health Insurance Rates

Shop around and consider a number of providers before you choose a part time student insurance policy. The premiums and the level of coverage will vary, depending on the insurance company.

You also need to be aware that the coverage offered will also vary depending on where you live and go to school. Be sure that when you ask for information that you specify what state you are living in.

If you will be graduating shortly, it may make more sense for you to buy an individual health insurance policy, rather than a student policy. Again, you should compare policies offered by different insurance companies to make sure that you have the coverage you need at an affordable price.

Part Time Student Health Insurance: Available Options

Buying Student Health Insurance Through A College Or University

One great way to find student health insurance is to ask whether the college or university you are planning on going to offers it. Before you make a decision to buy a plan sponsored by your school, make sure you review the policy provisions thoroughly and understand what the policy exclusions are. As a part-time student you may not be required to buy this insurance, and if you can get alternate coverage that fits your needs at a lower rate, it makes sense to do so.

American College Student Association

The American College Student Association offers insurance coverage to part time students who have a minimum of six credit hours. Under this plan, you will be covered for up to $25,000.00 for each injury or illness. In the case of a full time student, the policy limit for each injury or illness increases to $50,000.00.

In order to be eligible for coverage, you must first become a member of the American College Student Association. You don't have to be attending a particular school or majoring in a certain area to be eligible for coverage.

(Be careful about purchasing plan like these with very low limits as it is not unthinkable for the unfortunate to happen and get stuck with a medical bill that is well in excess of $100,000).

International Student Organization (ISO)

ISO Part Time Student Health Insurance offers a number of features, including:

  • Up to $25,000.00 in coverage

  • Students up to age 49 can be insured

  • Dependents are also eligible for coverage

  • Deductibles start at $90 per event

A number of insurance plans are offered by ISO, allowing students to choose the level of coverage and deductible that fits their needs and their budget. International students can also buy health insurance from ISO.
