Even if you are considering a legit disease specific policy, take into account any comprehensive policy you now have. There is no reason to have duplicate coverage. It’s expensive and unnecessary. Only one policy will pay out so you will be paying for a second policy that will not be used.

Stacked Policies – These are disease policies that are stacked. A cancer policy on top of a heart disease policy on top of another policy.

Discount Cards – Discount cards are not medical insurance. They claim you can save 15% to 40% on your medical bills and are marketed like insurance. However, once you pay their monthly fees for having the card you may not be saving anything.
Are there valuable and legitimate discount card offered through reliable companies? Absolutely. Just make sure you know who you are dealing with and what you are getting.

Faith Based Plans – You have to have faith that your medical bills will be paid (sometimes they are not). These are plans that are provided by a local or national church congregation and often come with stipulations based in the religious beliefs of that church. Again, there may be some good ones, but look out for the bad.

High Risk Pool (HIPUtah)
In 1991 the Utah Comprehensive Health Insurance Pool was set up with a contract through Select Health for those people who can not obtain health insurance at any price due to pre-existing health conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. HIPUtah also serves as the states HIPPA alternative. Currently, through a grant, until funds are depleted or until May 2009, a low income premium waiver program has been set up for low to moderate income individuals and families that will allow a 6 month waiver on premiums.
