Aetna lends a helping hand to medically fragile children in Georgia Posted: October 1st, 2010

By Maryalene LaPonsie

Insurer Aetna announced plans to offer additional benefits for children in Georgia who need transitional care. The insurance company will be the first in Georgia to provide coverage for families receiving services from the Dream House for Medically Fragile Children.

The Dream House is the only licensed children's transition center in the country, and the facility provides hospital-to-home services for children who need specialized, intensive care. The Dream House relies on a patented Family for Keeps model of care to allow young patients, who would otherwise have to remain hospitalized, the opportunity to return home.

"Without a facility of this nature, children typically have to stay longer in a costly hospital setting," says Laura O. Moore, a pediatric nurse of 20 years and founder of the Dream House. "This adds stress to their families and can expose them to further risk of infection."

In addition to providing increased services for medically fragile children, the expanded Aetna medical coverage benefits the company as well. Dr. Jack Spicer, Aetna medical director for Georgia says, "At a time when we are looking at how to lower health care costs and improve health outcomes, this innovative relationship with Dream House is a positive step for everyone."
