Amerigroup distributes iPads to service coordinators in Texas Posted: February 14th, 2011

By Maryalene LaPonsie

Amerigroup expanded its service area in Texas on Feb. 1 to include a greater portion of Tarrant County and the Forth Worth metro area. The expansion comes after the Texas Health and Human Services Commission selected Amerigroup's Texas health plan as one of two that would be used to improve health care coverage to seniors and disabled Texans.

In a press release announcing the move, Amerigroup estimates that 30,000 individuals are now eligible for medical coverage through the insurer's STAR+PLUS Program. With the added participants, the Medicaid program will serve approximately 80,000 people throughout the state.

To facilitate expansion, Amerigroup hired 60 new employees, bringing the company to a full-time Texas staff of 450. Among the employees are service coordinators who meet with members at their residences. To improve efficiency and better manage care, Amerigroup is outfitting some of these coordinators with Apple iPads and an iPad application designed to provide real-time access to health care records.

The iPad app, developed and deployed by Amerigroup, is expected to reduce time spent on administrative tasks and increase time spent with members.

"We are excited to launch this in conjunction with our Fort Worth implementation and look forward to implementing the iPad solution for our other Texas STAR+PLUS markets in Austin, Houston and San Antonio the latter part of this year," said Aileen McCormick, Amerigroup Southwest Regional CEO, in a statement.
