Health Underwriters happy to help reform Affordable Care Act Posted: January 26th, 2011

By Maryalene LaPonsie

President Barack Obama signaled in his second State of the Union address a willingness to take a second look at health reform. He stated, "if you have ideas about how to improve this law by making care better or more affordable, I am eager to work with you." The National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) has responded that they are ready and willing to help, according to a trade association news release.

"We applaud President Obama for acknowledging that current health care reforms lack broad appeal and we are encouraged by his request for new bipartisan ideas," said NAHU CEO Janet Trautwein in a statement.

As part of his State of the Union address, President Obama singled out a tax form 1099 reporting requirement that should be fixed so as not to burden small businesses. In addition to the 1099 fix, the NAHU identified three other key changes it believes should be made:

  1. Repeal of mandatory employer-sponsored health benefits, scheduled for 2014
  2. Rework of medical loss ratios which went into effect on Jan. 1, 2011
  3. Reform of medical liability laws

The NAHU represents 100,000 health insurance agents and brokers across the nation.
