UnitedHealth Group posts better than expected second quarter profits Posted: July 19th, 2011

By Maryalene LaPonsie

UnitedHealth Group continues to see strong growth as its 2011 second quarter profits were 17 percent higher than 2010 numbers. Overall revenues for the quarter were $25.2 billion, an eight percent increase from the previous year.

Leading the health insurance company's growth is its Optum businesses, which provide information and technology-enabled health care services. The three primary Optum businesses posted a 19 percent increase in revenues and had $1.3 billion in net earnings for the quarter. OptumHealth saw the largest percentage increase with second quarter revenues 46 percent higher than the year before.

UnitedHealthcare also experienced healthy growth. The company added 180,000 new policyholders during the second quarter, bringing the total number served by UnitedHealthcare to 1.2 million in 2011. Revenue growth was greatest in Community & State products. These plans saw second quarter revenues increase 15 percent year-over-year.

The second quarter numbers exceeded company expectations, and UnitedHealth Group revised its financial outlook as a result. The health insurance company now forecasts revenues of $101 billion for 2011. Net earnings are expected to be $4.15 to $4.25 per share.
