Walgreens to offer 350,000 free flu shots to uninsured and underinsured individuals Posted: December 28th, 2010
National drug retailer Walgreens has announced plans to offer free flu vaccines to eligible individuals in 15 markets. The initiative is part of a bigger effort by the Department of Health and Human Services to address disparities in flu vaccination rates.
Vouchers will be distributed for vaccinations at Walgreens pharmacies, Duane Reade pharmacy in New York or the Take Care Clinic. Each voucher will be good for one flu vaccinations, and vouchers will be available in the following markets:
- Atlanta
- Bronx, N.Y.
- Chicago
- Houston
- Kansas City, Mo.
- Newark, N.J.
- Oakland, Calif.
- Philadelphia
Additional vouchers will be available in the future through health departments in the following areas:
- Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
- Miami-Dade County, Fla.
- Palm Beach, Fla.
- Seattle, Wash.
- Waco, Texas
- Washington D.C.
- Northern N.H.
- Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, N.Y.
Individuals who meet eligibility criteria and are uninsured or considered underinsured will be able to claim one of 350,000 vouchers on a first-come, first-serve basis. The total value of the vouchers to be distributed by Walgreens is estimated at $10 million.
